2nd London arrived in France in January 1915 to join 17 Brigade of the 6th Division. At the end of July, 1915, the enemy attacked at Hooge in the Ypres salient, and captured the crater and front line there. 6th Division were given the task of regaining this which they did on 9th August. The following day 17 Brigade took over these recaptured positions and set about consolidating them. For the next two weeks 2nd London were hard at work every night carrying supplies and ammunition forward, digging new trenches and strengthening old ones. It was dangerous work. The German artillery targeted the approaches and their infantry launched bombing raids on these positions which drew all the troops, including the working parties into the fight. Casualties for 2nd London during this period amounted to 10 killed and 23 wounded.
